Centenary State Historic Site in Jackson, the original home of Centenary College of Louisiana, will stage the third re-enactment Saturday and Sunday of an August 1863 skirmish between Confederate soldiers and Union troops who were in the area to recruit slaves to join the 12th Infantry Corps d’Afrique.
The event begins with artillery and infantry drills throughout Saturday and Sunday mornings, with on-going camp life demonstrations leading up to the re-enactments at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Centenary is at 3522 E. College St. in historic Jackson, one block from the Audubon Regional Library, Republic of West Florida Historic Association Museum, and Old Hickory Railroad Depot and Train Museum.
On Saturday night, site staff will conduct candlelight tours every 30 minutes from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. depicting a Civil War soldier’s life after nightfall. The stations will include a full Civil War encampment, Civil War burial practices, a battlefield, and a surgeon at work.
Yellow Leaf festival
Arts for All of St. Francisville sponsors the annual Yellow Leaf Arts Festival from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday in shady Parker Park. Visitors will find paintings, pottery, sculpture, mixed media, metal, jewelry and more.
Musical performances include the West Feliciana Parish children’s chorus, The Mosspickers, The Laughing Lizards String Band, Kim Smith, Karuna Spoon, Lee Barber and the Broken Cup, Nancy Roppolo’s songwriter circle, Dylan Sneed with Judd and Maggie, and The Fugitive Poets.
Books on sale
Also in St. Francisville on Saturday, the Friends of the West Feliciana Parish Library’s annual book sale runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Town Hall. Look for gently used books for all ages, CDs, DVDs, videos and games. A raffle also will be held for a large Madame Alexander “Scarlett O’Hara” doll.
Nailing cancer
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, USA Nails, 20377 Old Scenic Highway, Zachary, will donate profits Monday to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Digging at the library
Children 8 and older are invited to participate in a simulated archaeological survey at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Zachary branch library. They will survey a “pretend” site, draw the artifacts that they find on a map and analyze their findings. Registration is required; call (225) 658-1860.
