Civil War ‘battles’ scheduled in Jackson

The 145th anniversary of the Battle of Jackson Crossroads will be commemorated Saturday and Sunday during the 17th annual re-enactment of the clash between a Union Army wagon train and Confederate cavalry.

The programs will be held in fields on La. 68 south of La. 10, near the original battle site.

More than 500 Civil War re-enactors and more than 20 cannons are expected for the event. The gates will open at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the main battle following at 2:30 p.m. The gates will open at 11 a.m. Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. battle.

Visitors are invited to stroll through the encampments and Sutler’s Row.

The Old Hickory Railroad in downtown Jackson will run during the event, and additional attractions include the Jackson Museum complex, Milbank Historic House and Feliciana Cellars.

Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life begins with a dinner honoring West Feliciana Parish’s cancer survivors at 6 p.m. Friday at West Feliciana Sports Park. The first lap of the relay begins at 7 p.m. Entertainment includes singer David St. Romain, Solar Heat of Baton Rouge and local talent winners.

A day for the arts
A Community Arts Day, sponsored by the Arts for All group, will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in Parker Park in St. Francisville, featuring art, music and creative writing activities for all ages. Artists will also have their work for sale, and the Fugitive Poets perform at 4 pm.

Vibes to follow
The fun doesn’t stop when the art is packed away, however, as “The Jazzy Jags” of Southern University entertain in Parker Park at 6 p.m. in “Vibes in the Ville.”

Rosedown wedding
Costumed ladies and gentlemen re-enact the April 9, 1857, wedding of Sarah Turnbull of Rosedown Plantation and James Pirrie Bowman of Oakley Plantation at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site.

The service will be performed in the Carriage Court in front of the Main House and will be followed by a reception.

Library visit
Author Cleo Scott Brown will discuss the book about her late father, “Witness to Truth: My Struggles for Human Rights in Louisiana,” at 6 p.m. May 1 at the Baker branch library.

John H. Scott was a pioneering civil rights leader in East Carroll Parish.

Yard work workshop
A series of horticulture seminars will conclude with a 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. “field day” on Saturday at the West Feliciana Parish Sports Park, featuring demonstrations on the use and care of lawn equipment.
