Fambrough: Two-minute drill here for fall sports

Consider this to be your fall version of the two-minute warning for high school sports.

With just three weeks left in the football season, a number of district titles and prospective playoff spots are still up for grabs.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association will announce football playoff seedings and pairings in a meeting at the Crowne Plaza on Nov. 8. The State Farm Prep Classic is Dec. 11-12 at the Superdome in New Orleans.

It’s much the same story for volleyball, with only a couple of weeks of regular-season action remaining. Playoff pairings and seedings come out even sooner, Nov. 2. The LHSAA State Tournament is Nov. 12-14 in Kenner.

With the completion of Saturday’s Walker Shootout, the country season enters its final stretch. The Metro Meet is set for Nov. 10., with the LHSAA State Meets set for Nov. 16-17 in Natchitoches. Also entering the final stretch is the swimming season. The Capital City Swim League Championship is scheduled for Nov. 6-7. The LHSAA state meets are Nov. 18-21 in Sulphur.

Bercegeay honored

Gonzales native Linden Bercegeay Jr. was honored Saturday night in Lafayette, when Cathedral-Carmel renamed its field Linden Bercegeay Field.

Bercegeay played football at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in the mid-1950s and became head football coach at Cathedral-Carmel in 1968, winning a district title that year. Bercegeay, who spent one year in the mid-1960s as head coach at Baker, continued to coach at CCHS through 1980.

The high school program was suspended in the 1980s, when St. Thomas More opened. Bercegeay went on to serve as Cathedral-Carmel’s principal from 1982 until his retirement in 1997.

Robertson commits

Kentwood High girls basketball player Ronneka Robertson has committed to the University of South Alabama.

Robertson, who helped Kentwood to the Ladies’ Top 28 Tournament in 2008, plans to sign with USA during the early signing period in November.
