OMAHA, Neb. — Three former LSU ballplayers watched Tuesday on TV when the Tigers trailed Rice late.
One got up, fidgeted and looked ready to leave. He explained he had things to do, and Rice had the game in hand, so …
The other two looked at him as if they were meeting a stranger, or someone who didn’t know the track record these Tigers have for dramatic comebacks.
“What are you thinking?”
“Wait this one out.”
“Dude, hold the rope.”
Oooh. Good one.
It’s hard to say what he owes them, but they saved him from having to explain why he missed LSU’s 6-5 comeback victory with four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Or maybe they saved him from lying.
Certainly he owes them for making sure he saw one of the most incredible finishes to a College World Series game — easily one of the first games most fans will talk about years from now when they discuss the 2008 Tigers.
Some of us are already running out of things to say about them.
At practice Wednesday, I asked backup catcher Sean Ochinko if LSU’s amazing season continues to astound him.
“It’s like it doesn’t even make sense,” Ochinko said. “At some point you don’t even count us out anymore. If we’re down by three runs in the ninth, five runs, six runs, anything’s possible.”
