Pat Shingleton for Nov. 28, 2009
We complete another hurricane season Monday with nine named storms, four hurricanes and two major hurricanes.
The weather on the Saturday evening after Thanksgiving 1898 in New England was rapidly deteriorating.
The Portland’s captain was known as a “storm racer” and would regularly make runs from Boston to Portland, Maine.
The steamship was designed for flat coastal bays.
It went down in 90-mile-per-hour winds and 30-foot seas at 9:30 p.m., verified by pocket watches that came ashore.
“The 1898 Hurricane” would claim 190 lives and was one of the worst in New England history, sinking 150 ships that night.
In August 2002, the wreckage of the Portland was located.
Fastcast: Clouds, then rain.
