Groups set veterans programs

Veterans Day is Wednesday, but observances begin Sunday with programs in Baker and East Feliciana Parish.

Baker’s program begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at City Hall Park and Veterans Plaza, 3325 Groom Road. The guest speaker will be veteran and Baker Middle School teacher Roosevelt Peters.

Also on Sunday, members of the Alexander Sterling Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold flag ceremonies at four East Feliciana Parish cemeteries to honor the veterans buried in them.

A 9 a.m. service is set for Dawson Cemetery, and 3 p.m. programs will be held at the Jackson Cemetery, Clinton Masonic Cemetery and Redwood Cemetery in Slaughter.

Head Start students and other schoolchildren will honor veterans with a 10:30 a.m. parade Tuesday at the courthouse in Clinton.

The Louisiana War Veterans Home’s annual observance will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

For early risers on Wednesday, the Bank of Zachary hosts a Veterans Day flag-raising program at 7:30 a.m. (coffee and doughnuts will be served) at the bank’s main office, 4743 Main St., Zachary.

The Zachary High School vocal group, “Bronco Beat,” will provide patriotic songs, and the school’s Junior Army ROTC cadets will direct the flag-raising. Iraq veteran Patrick Jenkins and World War II veteran B.H. Brantley will participate.

Also on Wednesday, West Feliciana Parish students will honor veterans at 9 a.m. at the high school stadium.

Art shows in Clinton

Julie Buckner is the featured artist for Clinton’s “Art ’Round the Square,” starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The event continues from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The event coincides Saturday with Clinton’s monthly community market.

Several other artists are showing their work during the two-day event.

Blood drive planned

A blood drive will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in St. Francisville for Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Contact George Newton at (225) 634-2868 for more information.

Meet the author

St. Francisville author Cari P. Adams will be at the West Feliciana Parish Library at 7 p.m. today to sign her book, “The Unicorn.”

Treasures on sale

St. Francisville’s downtown merchants and St. Francisville youth groups are holding a “Clean Out Your Closet and Store Room” sale day on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. at several business locations in the Historic District.

Mountain bike racing

 The West Feliciana Parish Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday will hold the inaugural Beast Master, a mountain bike race, at the West Feliciana Sports Park’s “Beast Trail.”

Race registration starts at 7 a.m., with the beginner event starting at 9 a.m. Remaining racers start at 10:15 a.m. and thereafter.
