Pat Shingleton for June 25, 2009
Tuesday’s heat caused me to forget the second half on my Monday column. The first drive-in theater in McComb, Miss., developed by T.G. “Teddy” Solomon. Drive-in theaters today have a transmitting device that secures a radio frequency to get the audio. Since 1937, a speaker was attached to a post that hung near the window. We arrived in light rain when a thunderstorm erupted. We watched and listened with wipers swishing and static audio. Suddenly, Tarzan swung through and off the screen! The movie was over; the storm toppled the screen! My father peeled out of the lot and the next morning, my brother, Denis, discovered an audio speaker attached to the window of the station wagon.
Fastcast: Steamy showers.
A 10 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny and hot, high near 98. Heat index values as high as 107. Calm winds becoming southerly at 5 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy, low of 77. Southerly winds 5 mph becoming calm.
