Snow rollers resemble South's hay rolls

I received an e-mail from Shirley Fleniken questioning whether I had ever heard of “snow rollers.”

She attached a note that on March 31, Tim Tevebaugh was heading home near Craigmont, Idaho, in the southern panhandle. He noticed rolls of snow moving across an open field, resembling the hay rolls that we see in pastures throughout south Louisiana, but much smaller.

Snow rollers occur when light, wet snow, similar to what we experienced this year on Dec. 11, is caught in a column of gusty winds. Similar to making a snowman, layers of snow continue to stack and once activated by the wind they create rolls.

Snow rollers traditionally are no longer than one foot and 8 inches in diameter.
