Wednesday practice notebook

Erin Michelli/

LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee has thrown the ball better than anybody else so far in preseason camp.

After the first day of true two-a-days, a few observations:

Of the four scholarship quarterbacks, Jarrett Lee is throwing the ball much better than anyone else. His passes are crisper, more on-target and he carries himself with more general confidence than the other three. Jordan Jefferson has struggled at times, in particular with short out patterns.
At Wednesday’s morning practice, Jefferson misfired several throws in a row and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton draped an arm around his shoulder and gave him a quick pep talk.

  • Speedy tailback Trindon Holliday missed both practices Wednesday.
  • Junior cornerback Jai Eugene was again running with Patrick Peterson with the first-unit secondary in both sessions Wednesday.
“Jai Eugene is competing like heck,” LSU coach Les Miles said Tuesday. “He’s cut a little weight and looks faster. He made a couple of plays in practice and I enjoyed his tackling early on in this practice.”
  • Sophomore T-Bob Hebert took at least half the snaps with the first team during the portion of practice the media was allowed to observe.
  • Freshman linebacker Tahj Jones was not in practice gear and his right arm was in a sling. Freshman defensive lineman Josh Downs was also out of practice gear for either practice session.
  • Offensive lineman Cordian Hagans and defensive end Chancey Aghayere were in green no-contact jerseys.
  • In the afternoon practice, freshman quarterback Russell Shepard ran a handful of routes with the receivers.
